Calpurnia: Calpurnia is the housekeeper of the Finch household. Cal has became almost like a second mother to Jem and Scout. Unlike the other "Negros" of Maycomb, Calpurnia is educated. She knows how to read and write. But, when she goes to the all black church, she chooses to talk like them. She doesn't want them to think of her as different. She wanted to show Scout and Jem how the black community lives. They don't have the money to buy the books for hymns and even if they did, they don't know how to read.
In Chapter 3, Scout brought Walter to her house for dinner. Scout spoke out at dinner and yelled at him for putting molasses on everything on his plate. Cal pulled her into the kitchen and asked her what she was doing. While she was talking to her, she explained that Walter doesn't have molasses where he lives and she should just let him be. She taught Scout about Social Prejustice. |

For Cal, I chose "Black or White" By Michael Jackson. I chose this song because when you think about it, Cal doesn't define just one race. Unlike all of the black community, she has a good education. She can read, write and speak with good grammar. She teaches Scout about the black community and is a "bridge" between the black and white communities.
